sixteen melted candles

dated october 16, 2006

it's a shame that birthdays just pass you by so quickly, like a comet to rarely visit our earthly skies.
it's almost unnoticeable when compared to the hundred days of your waiting. sometimes i wonder if it's really worth the wait, birthdays. one day you just wake up with a thousand birthday greetings in your cellphone waiting for you then before you know it, you'll find yourself staring at the clock, trying to keep yourself awake to relish the very last minutes of your birthday, since it's going to be a long long wait after that.

364 more days till my next birthday.

it's that one day when it seems like you're the only one that matters in this whole world. it's the only day when your inbox would actually be filled with text messages from different people. it's the only day when everyone seems to go out of their way just to greet you a happy birthday. unlike christmas, when you seem to be obliged to give your every friend gifts, during birthdays, it's just you who gets them, who'll open them and who'll appreciate them.

you see, i've never really made an effort to make a blog entry explaining every boring detail of my uneventful birthday. ever, in my (approximately) 3 years of blogging. and now i feel special enough to write one, thanks to the people who made me feel that special yesterday.

it wasn't the usual drama of a birthday, the one wherein your whole class would actually turn off the lights to surprise you with a deafening birthday greeting the moment you come in the room. i didn't have balloons, neither did i have party hats, and i didn't spend my day in the mall with my cousins, since it was a monday (and that's just terribly unfortunate)

waking up to greet the day was actually worth it. and i want to name everyone whom i want to thank, here. excuse the lenghty entry.

mica was the first to greet me during my actual birthday (of course, aside from my family). then koko did, then odi, then dai, then alvin, then my relatives, then my classmates when i reached school. it hasn't even occurred to yet, that morning, that i was already sixteen, but then everyone was telling me "happy birthday, sixteen ka na!" so i tried to believe that.

alex gave me a really really sweet gift. it was a Nancy Drew book (The Clue Crew), and it was so special since when we were little kids, we used to adore Nancy Drew and we've always tried to find some mystery, something we could work on just so we could be like our auburn haired idol.

Dear Therese,

Happy sweet sixteen to my fellow Nancy Drew sleuth and partner in crime. God Bless You!

Love, Alex

i loved it loved it loved it. i just want to tell her how much i appreciate the thought. really alex, thank you. it made my day.

well actually i kind of also thought that i'd give her a Nancy Drew book for Christmas, you know, for old time's sake, but now i have to be more creative than that, i guess!

okay moving on.

Patrice gave me a really nice birthday card (with a red electric guitar design at the front), written backwards (way back 2nd year, we used to write each other notes in that manner). Thanks for bothering Pats, not! haha kidding.
Angela also gave me one, and she let lots of people sign the card too. It made me smile, it realy did.

So I came home and screamed when my mom handed me a Fushigi Yugi DVD from my cousin. OMG. i really was so happy. (anime freak much?) since i was such a huge fan when i was, what, grade 4? really, and i'm posting this for everyone (well, at least those who actually read this) to see. Yay! It's the complete thing, by the way! oh wow, i can't wait till sembreak.

Then my other cousin gave me pastries and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, one book in my incredibly long booklist. So yay! Then my aunt gave me a kirsty bag, which was something i need at the moment. Then of course we had to go to the bookstore to buy books (it was my day, so no one can argue with me). I bought 3 (well, 4 if you include my sister's book- share kami actually). So that also made my day.

So all in all, I have 5 books, plus 4 Archie Comics I bought at the North Sector bazaar last Sunday (for 10 pesos each!)
i have a lot of reading to do after sem break. well, of course after i watch Fushigi Yugi! haha!

We ate out, spanish food. buffet all the way, again. haha i enjoyed the food, and my time with the family, even though it was a school night. i appreciated my cousin's effort to take us there yesterday. thanks.

nat was the last one to greet me. corny mo dude. haha joke lang. salamat
although one thing that pissed me off was i didn't get to watch PDA!

YES people, i do watch PDA, and i take pride in that. HAHA!
(nakatulog kasi ako ng 8:30 pagdating namin. pag gising ko 12 na. rarr.)

anyway, that was the birthday that i've waited for since last year. beauty in all its simplicity. only 24 hours of me time compared to the 8,736 hours of waiting, of randomness. and i ask you, are birthdays still worth the wait?

i tell you that it is. your birthday is like your special mark, sort of a new beginning as a more mature person of the world. as i spent the day in school with my classmates, and outside with my family; as i smiled a gazillion times that day because of the gazillion birthday greetings and small, very much appreciated efforts of my friends and family, it's not always about the gifts, i've realized, but the memories it leaves you with. memories enough to make you last the long and painful wait.

till next year, suckers.

Cheers.

Devious And Twisted,

Therese

PS: i've already read the The End, the 13th and last book of the series (ASOUE), by the way. i got it the day it was released. uuh. it was so disappointing. i wish i could write Lemony Snicket a letter stating how unfinished the book seems to me, and to everyone else who has read it already. now the 12th book remains to be my favorite still, but i won't spoil anything for those who still want to read it. but i tell you, it is disappointing. sorry.

face it, sucko.

i'm the hero of fools.

all quoted.

"The sad truth is that the truth is sad."

"People don't always get what they deserve in this world"

"You can not be a supermodel."

"I'm beginning to think that washing my face is a complete waste of time"

"The world is a harum scarum place."

"If a guy is witty, charming and artistic, he is probably gay."

"Fate is like a strange, unpopular restaraunt, filled with odd waiters who bring you items you never asked for and don't always like."

"In relationships, it is best to assume nothing."

"Not only am I very intelligent, but I am also very smart."

"Hey, I heard your friend died"

"Yea"

"Well, don't feel bad. He's an old guy, and that's what old guys do. They DIE."

"Certain things they should stay the way they are.You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone. I know it's impossible but it's too bad anyway."

"I remember how, a couple of days ago, you and I killed a couple of hours with a computer game. Perhaps the game amused me more than it did you; I desperately needed a little respite from all my thoughts. But each time we 'died' in that game, a new screen immediately came up, and we were off again. How can we know that there isn't a 'new screen' for our souls as well? I don't think there is, I really don't. But the dream of something unlikely has its own special name. We call it hope."

blasto fasto. congratulations, reader, you've clicked the scroll button long enough to have reached the part that nobody dares to reach. now buzz off.
